Carolyn's Best of Beauty 2014: My Favourite Skincare and Makeup Picks

This was written after I posted my 2015 favourites, which was quite counter-intuitive because shouldn't 2014 come first? However, I was quite new to skincare in 2014, and was super slow in writing so I'm starting everything slow.

I decided to write a 2014 favourites, after listing down everything I started using in 2014 and realize that oh wow I did have a lot of 2014 products that I could share with you guys. And most of them I haven't got a time to write a single review on. So why don't I just share it here then? Besides, most of them are also commonly available brand at Malaysian drugstores so this review will be helpful for local Malaysian readers as well. Let's go through them!

Drop me a message or comment below if you are interested to know about any single products here:

★★★★★ my holy grail
★★★★ excellent and I really enjoy it
★★★ good but totally replaceable
★★ yuack, something about its quality turns me off
★ gosh, why did I ever waste my money and time on it?!
PS: the rating is based on my 2014 "tastes". My standard and set requirements have gone up over the year. These rating will be 1-2 stars lower if I were to use my current standard.

Review: Dr. Wu Intensive Whitening System Intensive Whitening Toner, Lotion, Spot Treatment and Serum

I got this Dr. Wu intensive whitening system (they called their product series "system") from SASA when I was looking for a higher-end cosmetics that can help to get rid of my freckles. I was quite new to skincare and ingredients back then so I didn’t know much about ingredients and other brands except for those we have at local drugstores like Watson’s, Guardian, AEON Wellness and SASA.

I fell into SASA “sales gimmick” when I was new to their products. Basically their promoters will push you to buy a lot of products, promising good results, which end up costing you hundreds and even thousands. They hard sell Dr. G to me at first, then Dr. Wu when I broke out badly from Dr. G. When Dr. Wu doesn’t live up to my expectation, they went for Methode Swiss. I learned from their old staff that these were the things the promoters will push you to buy because it gave them better commission. Yeah, my poor wallet.

Let's look at some of the impulsive buys I did at SASA:

  • Dr. Wu Intensive Whitening Toner with Vitamin C+ 150ml, RM 119.00 @ SASA
  • Dr. Wu Intensive Whitening Serum with Vitamin C+ 30ml, RM 199.00 @ SASA
  • Dr. Wu Extra Whitening Lotion with AA2G 50ml RM, 119.00 @ SASA
  • Dr. Wu Whitening Spot Treatment with Vitamin C+ 20ml, RM 169.00 @ SASA

Review: Missha The Style Beautiful Tint

I know Missha is quite well-known for their bb cream, but wasn't so sure about their lip make up until I received this Missha The Style Beautiful Tint as a birthday gift from my mom last year. It is now one of my favourite make up items!

The one I got was coral, a very beautiful colour in my opinion but definitely too sharp to wear unless you also put on eye make up. Since I am too lazy to do that (I just want to avoid that make up removing part later), I still haven't finished this little thing.

There are four colours from this range to choose from: pink, coral, orange and red. All I think are very nice colours!

Let's take a closer look at the lip tint:

Comparison Review of Hada Labo Toners: Hydrating Lotion, Hydrating Light Lotion and Whitening Lotion

Hada Labo is rather famous with their toner, which also functions like a moisturizer as it is quite moisturizing. I have tried both their Hydrating and Whitening ones, and have been using them for more than 5 years as a good addition to my skincare routine.

Since 2014, there are two variations for the Hada Labo Hydrating Toner: normal and light. They are both now less sticky and more moisturizing. The product comes in a watery consistency that can be poured directly on your palm and pat on your skin for absorption.

Comparison Review: Hada Labo Hydrating Face Wash vs. Whitening Face Wash vs. AHA+BHA Foam Wash

Hada Labo is widely available in most online and local retail outlets. I started to use this few years ago, when I was in my early 20s, and is still using its hydrating toner. This line is designed with a good concept - perfect x simple. So it is quite suitable for all skin types, although its toner and moisturizer are very sticky before they change their formula.

Today's review will be about the three classic cleansers I have used from their lines. Since I only started my blog a year after I used these products, I don't keep any photos so available ones are all official images I grabbed from their website.

Comparison Review: 9 Classic My Beauty Diary Masks

My Beauty Diary masks were one of the earliest masks I encountered during my university years. They are quite famous back then, and remains relevant until this day. The mask is widely available at Watson, Guardian and Sasa outlet at RM 39.90 per box (10 pcs). I have tried out quite a number of flavours, some were quite good but some were just normal. But I wouldn't have high expectation on sheet masks that only costs RM 3.90.
