Comparison Review: Belif The True Anti-Aging Essence and Belif The True Decoction - Anti Aging Shaking Water

Ever curious about the newly released The True Decoction - Anti-Aging Shaking Water and how does it differ from the Belif's Top 5 Best-Sellers The True Anti-Aging Essence? Follow me in this post to decode the similarities and differences between the two products, and whether or not you need to get this The True Decoction - Anti-Aging Shaking Water too if you already have the Anti-Aging Essence. And if you haven't, which one is a better choice.

Belif launched The True Decoction in 2016, which is a new herbal extracting method by boiling the herbs, kinda like how we make tea or coffee. This method allows the herbal ingredients to better dissolve so that beneficial components can be extracted from the solution.

The True Decoction -  Anti-Aging Shaking Water is only available in Korea and Taiwan right now, the one I got are miniatures purchased from Testerkorea, so I don't have a lot of information to share with you guys since I don't have the box and the official information in English. All information provided below are translated from the Taiwanese website.

We will look at the Anti-Aging Essence first, then move on to the Anti-Aging Shaking Water.

Belif The True Anti-Aging Essence is a shaking type essence with moisturizing, soothing and anti-oxidizing benefits. It is consisted of two layers - a moisturizing calendula whipped cream layer and an anti-oxidizing acai berry essence layer.

You are required to shake it to mix both layers up before using.

The essence when mixed properly comes is in the form of a watery liquid that dries down with a thin emollient layer on top. It has a nice herbal scent that I personally find relaxing.

Belif claims that this contains 10% humectant in the acai essence phase and 52% emollient in the calendula cream phase. It has a 12% moisture holding capacity and is formulated with three Napiers formula, namely the AA formula, moisture formula, and original formula.

INGREDIENTS ANALYSIS

This is a seriously long ingredients list, since Belif includes three Napiers Formula in here. We have Napiers Original Formula designed to keep the skin healthy and delay the first signs of aging. This formula is the most basic ones, constantly appearing in many Belif products as it carries loads of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory and anti-blemish ingredients like oat kernel extract, calendula flower extract, catnip flower extract, raspberry leaf extract, wild indigo root extract and chickweed extract. The function is also really similar to Napiers Moisture Formula which is intended to hydrate the skin while control and regulate sebum production hence optimizing the skin's water and oil balance. These ingredients are also commonly present in many moisturizing products such as the Moisturizing Bomb.

Napiers Anti-Aging formula features euphrasia extract, licorice root extract, yarrow extract, horse chestnus extract, bilberry extract and so on with potent antioxidizing ingredients that help boost skin circulation and improve skin elasticity and reduce signs of aging.

Major ingredients used here are acai berry extract, which is a potent antioxidant that can fight the skin's aging process. We all love antioxidants for its anti-aging and skin repairing benefits but this acai berry brings many times more antioxidants than any other extracts you can possibly get out there.

Subsequently we have calendula flower extract and oil, both of which are known for its anti-oxidizing, anti-acne, and soothing benefits. It is the main ingredient in Kiehl's best-selling toner and has helped many oily and acne-prone skin people control their troubled skin.

The rest of the ingredients are mainly emollients, emulsifiers, hydrating ingredients as well as essential oils. Essential oil, in addition to its skin moisturizing and anti-oxidizing benefits, are also a natural preservative and fragrance ingredients. A lot of these essential oils, such as borage oil, rosemary oil, chamomile flower oil, lavender oil, rose flower oil, citrus oil and geranium oil are commonly used essential oils in skincare for added antioxidizing and soothing purposes. These oils may not suit every skin type though, some oils like citrus oil may cause photosensitivity whereas lavender oil may irritate certain skin types. But I personally find that they are relatively gentle in this formula. Even my sensitive skin friend doesn't face any problem when using this.

PERFORMANCE

I started adding this essence into my routine about 9 months ago, but using it more frequently recently when I am wrapping things up for a review. I think it is an essence that is suitable for morning and evening, after your serum and right before a moisturizer. I normally wouldn't use it before my lightweight oil or serum because I feel that the emollient inside will stop those from penetrating better.

I would not say that I notice visible firming, lifting or wrinkles-repairing benefits, even with more consistent use. But I do notice that my skin is plumper, softer and more moisturized having incorporated this into my routine. This is a unique product with both humectant and emollient phases that can really smooth out and soften the skin. This feels like a skin softener (aka toner) with non-sticky emollient content. In other words, given the ingredients and performance, don't expect this to un-age or anti-age you, it can only smooth, plump and soften your skin with its moisturizing components and protect your skin from free radical damages.

Now, let's look at the The True Decoction - Anti-Aging Shaking Water.

Belif The True Decoction - Anti Aging Shaking Water is a skin booster that you use as the first step of your skincare routine after your cleanser and before a toner. It is a liquid essence with two layers of essence - the calendula's emollient whipped cream essence and the berries hydrating watery essence.

The essence claims to have anti-oxidizing benefits for your skin. It can also improve other skincare's absorption by 96.7%. Your skin will also appear more radiant after using.

shake well before using

The product comes in the form of lightweight milky essence that gets absorbed into the skin almost instantly, leaving the skin soft and plump.

INGREDIENTS ANALYSIS
(CosDNA)

Just like the Anti-Aging Essence, the Anti-Aging Shaking Water has a long ingredients list. But since Belif moves cyclopentasiloxane high up the list, this product is lighter in consistency and is better absorbed by the skin.

Belif uses 3 Napiers formula and a new root decoction formula in this Shaking Water. Original, Moisture and AA formulas are the same as the Anti-Aging Essence, which we have discussed previously. Root decoction formula is consisted of 3 ingredients, namely bistort root exract, mullein extract and silverweed extract. Bistort root extract is a herbal ingredient with rich tannins, flavonoids, calcium and protein contents. Bistort root extract is traditionally used to treat cystitis, burns, bleeding gums, and so on. The rich tannin content in this herb also gives it decent astrigent and anti-inflammatory properties. Mullein is an anti-inflammatory herb that can calm redness and reduce blackheads as well as treat acne. Silverweed, on the other hand, is quite similar to bistort root extract as it contains tannins and other anti-oxidizing ingredients with excellent skin healing benefits. The polyprenols content inside also offers abundant anti-viral properties to silverweed.

Other skin benefiting extracts include calendula flower extract, olive extract, cranberry seed oil, sweet almond oil, borage seed oil, rosemary leaf extract, lavender oil, rose flower oil, sunflower seed oil, hyaluronic acid, adenosine, cacao extract and so on skin nourishing and anti-oxidizing ingredients. A lot of these ingredients are commonly found in moisturizing cream or serum, such as Blithe Velvet Yam Pressed Serum. They are likely to present in relatively small amount in this Shaking Water to offer really lightweight anti-oxidizing and nourishing benefits.

PERFORMANCE

This essence is a well-made skin booster with lightweight consistency and fast absorbency. I apply it as the first step of my skincare routine after cleansing and do notice that it has helped to soften my skin and prepped it for better absorption later. It feels like a very potent anti-oxidizing toner so I sometimes just skip my toner whenever I am using this Shaking Water. I also won't use this with my other first serum as both have similar functions.

The best thing about this product is that it is not fermented, does not contain alcohol or other harsher active ingredients. So if you are sensitive to fermented products or alcohol you can always check this out. I wouldn't say that my skin is a lot firmer or my fine lines diminished after adding this into my routine. This feels like a lighter version of the Anti-Aging Essence so it can do whatever the Anti-Aging Essence does. It can also prep my skin for better skincare absorption.

COMPARISON

As you can see, both products are really similar in many ways, in term of packaging, ingredients, consistency and claims. So we will talk about their differences here.

The Anti-Aging Shaking Water is a skin booster whereas the Anti-Aging Essence is a skin treatment. As such, they serve different purposes in your skincare regime. The Shaking Water is a first serum where you use to prep and nourish your skin, sort of like an appetizer whereas the Anti-Aging Essence is an essence you use to moisturize and fence your skin off free radicals damage.

The Shaking Water contains more lightweight but potent essential oils whereas the Anti-Aging Essence is richer in emollient. The Shaking Water is also a more upgraded version of the Anti-Aging Essence as it contains a new "Root Decoction  Formula". The price is also slightly higher (KRW 18,000, about RM 25) for the Shaking Water.

Other than that, there is literally no discernible differences between the two products. Belif Taiwan claims that the Shaking Water is a antioxidants rich berries juice for our skin, which is the "first step to younger looking skin". However, if observe carefully, it doesn't make this product any distinctive from the Anti-Aging Essence. It doesn't explain why this product is so unique despite its shared similarities with the Anti-Aging Essence. Both are "shake-shake essence", and both are for anti-aging purposes.

Anti-Aging Essence vs. Anti-Aging Shaking Water

CONCLUSION

If I were to choose, which one would I purchase? It would be the Anti-Aging Shaking Water. The reasons are simple: it is lightweight, it is more nutritious, it has more volume in it, and I like anything first step. I find the Anti-Aging Essence a bit awkward because apparently I cannot use the Anti-Aging Essence before a serum since it has rich emollient content that might block other skincare products from absorbing. And I think the Shaking Water penetrates deeper and is more hydrating than the Anti-Aging Essence. Most importantly, both products give my skin the same results: velvety soft and smooth skin, less irritation from uv damage and lightweight nourishment, but the Shaking Water offers more, which is skin prepping and softening.

Looking for a good, lightweight yet antioxidants rich skin booster? This will hit your button.
