Review: The Plant Base Nature Solution Skin Essence

I guess our local market is expanding fast now. A lot of new brands are coming into the market, such as Jayjun, Cosrx, Guerisson, Bifesta, and so on. Some of them are available in local retailers such as AEON Wellness, Guardian and Watson's. Many more are available in online markets, among them Hermo Malaysia.

Today, I'm gonna share my thoughts on this new The Plant Base Nature Solution Skin Essence I received from Hermo Malaysia for review purpose. This product is also available at Watson's so you could check it out as well.

So what is The Plant Base and how is it differ from other Korean skincare brands? According to its official website, The Plant Base is a skincare brand uses juices extracted from botanical ingredients. It is Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) certified, International Organization for Standardization (ISO) of Quality and Environmental Management System certified.

The product is a first serum type product, just like Innisfree Green Tea Seed Serum, Belif Numero 10 Essence and so on. You use this as the first step of your skincare routine, before toner, serum and cream. It contains a blend of 13 natural oils and 62.84% bamboo water. The Plant Base claims that this can give you a healthy, glowing, and youthful looking skin. It also has anti-oxidizing and moisturizing benefits.

The product comes in a sealed box.

The product is free of 10 harmful ingredients such as paraben, artificial colouring, synthetic fragrance, DEA, mineral oil and so on.

The product is a clear and bouncy gel that spreads easily over the skin. The Plant Base claims that this is an oil-drop essence that blends botanical oils with watery essence. It will transform into watery oil when you blend it out on the skin, leaving a silky soft finish. It doesn't get absorbed as quickly as other first serum like Innisfree though but the consistency is still considered lightweight and fast-absorbing.

INGREDIENTS ANALYSIS
(CosDNA)

This product has really good ingredients. Main ingredient is bamboo juice, which is a steam distillate obtained from bamboo extract, which gives the skin strength and suppleness with its rich silica content. It constitutes roughly 63% of the essence, its rich silica, minerals and vitamins content are perfect for skin soothing, moisturizing and elasticity-boosting purposes. Other skin-benefiting juices include steam distilled from lavender flower and cornflower, mostly with anti-inflammatory and conditioning benefits.

Beneficial botanical oils such as buriti oil, dong guai root oil, jojoba oil, grapefruit peel oil, argan oil, sunflower seed oil, rose oil, cedarwood bark oil, geranium oil, elettaria cardamomum seed oil, sandalwood oil and so on are potent antioxidants and emollient oils with multiple skin benefits. Sunflower seed oil and buriti oil, for instance, are commonly used in sunscreen due to its soothing and UV protecting benefits. Elettaria cardamomum seed oil is a radiant-imparting oil that is rich in vitamin C content. Sandalwood oil and geranium oil, on the other hand, can prevent breakouts and soothe inflammation. Octinoxate, a sunscreen ingredient, is also added here which I am not sure why. Normally I don’t enjoy skincare essence with sunscreen ingredient especially those that I wear at night. I think this is mostly added here to provide UV protecting properties.

Other skincare extracts such as greensil, persimmon, licorice root, cactus, white mulberry, green tea, and heartseed are also added to provide additional skincare benefits. Greensil is fine silica extracted from bamboo that is suitable for acne-prone and oily skin. Persimmon is an anti-aging and soothing ingredient that can also heal skin damage. Licorice root extract is an anti-inflammatory ingredient that can reduce hyperpigmentation and improve the elasticity of the skin. It is a natural form of niacinamide with the skincare properties of licorice root extract. White mulberry tree extract is also a skin brightening and melanin-synthesizing ingredient with anti-aging benefit. Cactus is an effective skin moisturizing, anti-oxidizing and healing ingredient. And then we have heartseed extract which can soothe and protect the skin due to its high phytosterols and triterpenes contents.

CONCLUSION

The Plant Base claims that this is a natural skincare product, which I think is reflected on its short shelf life. The one I received is due to expire in March 2018, so you are advised to use it ASAP once you bought it.

The Plant Base is a unique skincare brand that attempts to correct our perception on waterless products. Normally, skincare products that contain water as the major ingredient tend to be considered less concentrated thus less "worth-it". However, The Plant Base argues that "plant extract water" such as harakake juice, bamboo juice, aloe vera juice and so on are potent skincare ingredient. Water extracted from plants contains enormous life energy to revitalize and rejuvenate the skin.

The Plant Base Nature Solution Skin Essence is a unique blend of moisture and oil. It contains 13 different types of botanical oils to balance, hydrate and moisturize the skin. Its main target is individuals with damaged moisture barrier, dry-dehydrated and dry skin. I wouldn't recommend oily skin to try this out though due to its oil components. I find the product not as easily absorbed as other first-serum type product and could be a little oily for oily skin type. But dry-dehydrated and those with damaged moisture barrier and difficulty holding oil should definitely give this a go.

The product claims to have moisturizing, pores-controlling, purifying, and anti-aging benefits. Its patented INFLAX technology with a blend of botanical ingredients are said to offer ample wrinkles-care and anti-oxidizing benefits. However, to be honest, I don't really see any of the claimed benefits having used 40-50% of the product in the past 1 month. Maybe the time period is too short to offer any significant wrinkles-improving benefit. However, antioxidants and oils are usually nourishing ingredient that can relieve the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines so it will definitely mitigate those signs of aging.

I think this product is best used in an air-conditioned room where the surrounding is rather dry and dehydrating. It may not be perfect for warmer season or hot summer afternoon, but will definitely work well for drier months. Individuals who find Innisfree Green Tea Seed Serum too light can also look for this as an alternative.

Pros:
- hygienic, convenient packaging
- interesting texture
- suitable for dry-dehydrated, dull, dry and aging skin
- lightweight
- natural and safe ingredients used
- pretty moisturizing and soothing

Cons:
- could be expensive (40ml / ~RM 120)
- the scent is not my personal favourite
- a bit "oily" and hard to absorb for normal, oily, oily-dehydrated skins
- no visible results in term of wrinkles-care

packaging: ★★★★
scent: ★★★ (not my personal favourite, but very floral and natural)
texture: ★★☆ (not as fast-absorbing as I expect)
ingredients: ★★★★☆ (rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory botanical extracts)
performance - balancing: ★★★★
performance - moisturizing: ★★★☆ (if you have dry skin type)
performance - wrinkles-care: ★★ (no visible improvements)
general impression: ★★★ (a decent first-serum type skin booster but I still prefer Innisfree Green Tea Seed Serum as it is lighter and suits my skin type better)
